How did you start blogging?
My lifelong friends like to joke that I’ve always been a blogger. As a child, I would create themed pages in my sketch pads and draw pictures with really elaborate stories, from Jetson’s inspired houses to fashionable ladies in my own designs. So when I discovered blogs, naturally I was instantly drawn to this medium of storytelling. I couldn’t stop reading blogs and I wanted to start my own but I was in college and then graduate school and never had the chance to really commit. Plus, back then I was a bit reluctant to share so much of myself on the internet. Then I became a mother and I found myself searching for a blog that spoke to me as a millennial mom of color so I decided to take the leap and start my own.
How did you develop such a unique personal style?
I believe that your personal style is a visual expression of your story. Again, this goes back to my childhood, I was always been very thoughtful about my personal style. So much so, I vividly remember standing in the mirror in the early 90’s with my backpack and trying to figure out if it looked better on my left side or right side, practicing my handwriting to make it as distinguishable as possible or cutting photos out of magazines to rearrange outfits the models were wearing. The small details were always important to me. Also, I grew up in the Caribbean so my culture influences my love for bright colors, accessories and mixing textures.
How do you put your own unique and personal twist on sponsored posts?
I take on campaigns that resonate with my lifestyle and it’s important to me to always give my audience content that’s valuable. I want them to feel inspired, laugh or get an exciting idea that could potentially be a game changer for them.
What are some of your blog photography tips?
I love shooting my images in natural light in manual mode either outdoors or in front of a window. I usually take a few test shots from different angles to determine how to compose my photos to give my readers the best experience.
When I don’t have my DSLR handy and I am using my iPhone, I utilize the AE/AF Lock feature to capture the best image of my subject regardless of movement.
What are some Clever tips for planning out/organizing your posts every week?
I usually start by making a weekly editorial calendar and then listing all of the things that I need to do for each post and social media share. Then I batch tasks, so I shoot all images at the same time, write on one day, batch edit, as well as schedule time to plan all of my social media shares for the week.
Also, keeping blog post drafts and ideas in a cloud that I can access from my phone, tablet, and computer really helps me to use my time effectively so I squeeze in a little editing or writing in the waiting room at the pediatrician or when I’m stuck on a long line.
