How did you start blogging, and what was the inspiration behind your blog?
When I started Pumpkin + Peanut Butter in the fall of 2014, I was in dire need of a creative outlet. My husband was in the midst of his first year of law school (aka studying 24/7), we had just moved to a new city, and I was feeling lackluster about my new teaching job. I needed something in my life to spark excitement and feed that creative itch that was constantly in the back of my mind. Meanwhile, I had been reading food blogs for years and had this secret dream of one day starting my own. One fall morning, I woke up, and decided to just bite the bullet and go for it!
My inspiration behind the blog was to share delicious, healthy-ish, approachable recipes that anyone could accomplish and enjoy. I hoped to connect with other food-obsessed readers who shared the same passion for whole foods and healthy eating at I did! Four years later, I have fallen in love with food blogging and adore connecting with my followers on a regular basis.
What are some of your favorite blogs to read?
I have been following How Sweet Eats since 2010 and it still remains one of my very favorite blogs to this day! I also love Spice + Sprout, Fooduzzi, the Foodwright, Joy Food Sunshine, and Fork in the Kitchen, all of which are good friends of mine today!
Your blog focuses primarily on food, while still covering other topics. How do you incorporate lifestyle and parenting posts in a natural way?
My favorite blogs to read are primarily food blogs, but they also share snippets of life beyond the kitchen. I absolutely LOVE these peeks into their lives, as they’ve allowed me to really connect with the person behind the blog. I think that is so important in today’s world of blogging and social media. We can get so caught up in the highlight reel and perfect photos – it’s nice to see a little bit of everyday, real life interspersed to help us get to know a person better.
My goal with incorporating lifestyle and parenting posts is to show that there is more to my life than just food (of course!) and to connect with my readers on a more personal level. I’ve found that my audience really resonates with these posts and they’ve allowed me to get to know many of my followers even better! I truly enjoy writing these more personal posts and engaging with my readers through them.
What are some of your blog photography tips?
Lighting is everything! If you’re new to photography, start playing with light. See which areas of your home let in the best light, how the time of day effects the shadows, how the weather outside can change the tone. The more you experiment and practice, the more comfortable you’ll feel behind your camera. When I first got my DSLR camera, I practiced every single weekend for almost a year. I feel like I’m still learning more every time I shoot and get so excited when I practice new skills with my camera!
What are some Clever tips for planning out/organizing your posts every week?
Start a content calendar! It doesn’t have to be fancy – something as simple as Google calendar. I am constantly updating my calendar to plan out seasonal content, keep track of deadlines, and plan new post ideas. This allows me to stay organized and keep all my ideas in one place.
