How did you start blogging?

I started Slashed Beauty out of a need for more budget-friendly content. I was beauty obsessed, but being a freshman in college I couldn’t afford most of the go-to products my favorite gurus were talking about. To this day, I still try to focus on products that give you bang for your buck without sacrificing quality or trendiness.

What social media outlet do you use most frequently and why?

I feel the most “in-the-know” by keeping up with my Facebook feed. Needless to say, it pretty much aggregates content from all other social platforms since my friends often connect their accounts. I’m also always literally always on YouTube. It’s not only part of my job, but I also turn to it for entertainment since I don’t have cable. As far as for blogging, Instagram is still one of my faves to scroll for inspiration.

What is your inspiration for such fun and unique look and style tutorials?

When I’m starting a new look, I first and foremost gravitate to what I personally want to wear. Then, I see where the mood takes me. If I’m feeling daring, I’ll push myself out of my comfort zone to try out new trends and bold elements. However, my goal with my tutorials is to share tips that others can use on a daily basis so I love sharing attainable styles they can get a lot of use out of.

What are some of your blog photography and videography tips?

When you can’t splurge for the pro lighting, always use natural light. Take photos and videos in front of a big window when you have a lot of sunshine but not too much direct light, as to avoid shadows. If you only have your phone to take pictures, use the back camera— it’s usually better resolution than the front-facing camera so you’ll be able to see more detail clearly. Place a mirror in front of you so you’re able to frame the photo by looking through it at the screen.

What are some CLEVER tips for planning out/organizing your posts every week?

I plan out my content about two weeks in advance and write them one week in advance. I usually take inventory of any press samples I receive, grouping them together into potential looks, roundups, and reviews. I go from there to start planning out my blog schedule and keep everything in a Word Doc. I’m able to see everything on the screen at once and can move things around as I have to insert sponsored posts on certain due dates.

How do you put your own unique and personal twist on sponsored posts?

I try to create sponsored content that offers more value than just introducing a new product. I try to talk about the highlighted product within a set of tips to add value for the reader. Recently, I’ve also been trying to create posts that incorporate more shots of me using the product (with my face showing) vs. product shots only. I think it makes for more engaging social posts and a personal feel when the reader can see the person behind the claims.
